SOUTH CANTERBURY CLUB

PROFIT OF £826 FOR YEAR The South Canterbury Jockey Club showed a profit of £826 12s lOd for the year ended July 31, and the club’s assets now exceed" liabilities by £2193 14s 4d. This is shown in the club’s accounts, which will be presented at the annual meeting on August 26. ’ Because of the alteration of the balance date to July 31, five meetings were held during the club’s financial term. The meetings on December 22 and May 17 were held in wet weather, and the October meeting was postponed until January 2 on account of heavy rain. "The race meetings held on June 30, 1951, January 2, and June 28 were excellent days, the latter having an on-course -totalisator turnover of £44,269. which was a club record,” says the report of Mr C. L. Orbell, chairman of the club. Fields had been good and racing excellent. The membership of the club is now 493. Fifty-six new members were elected during the year, and there were 15 resignations. Arrangements have been completed, the report says, for the installation of photofinish apparatus on the course, and it was hoped to have the equipment in operation for the October meeting. Main items of expenditure for the year were: stakes (less donations), £10,500; totalisator costs, £2733 Is sd; racecourse rent. £2766 7s 4d; salaries and wages. £1764 10s Id. Totalisator income was £15,087 5s 4d; nominations and acceptances £2493 15s; and gate takings (less amusement tax), £1662 17s lOd.
