MEETING AT ELLERSLIE

CLIFTON WINS HUNT CUP

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 17. The Pakuranga Hunt Club’s meeting was held in fine weather at Ellerslie on Saturday. The track was slow. The totalisator handled £188,814 15s, including £42,331 on doubles, compared with £172,949 5s last year. The winning doubles Clifton and Gollen, paid £26 12s 6d for £l. After the running of the Jellicoe Handicap an inquiry was held into interference to several horses at the start caused by Prince Regent turning sideways. This was found to be accidental, and no action was taken. During the running of the Bullock Webster Handicap Thelma’s Grey fell and brought down Shikari Lad. After hearing evidence the stewards found that the fall was accidental, and caused by Thelma’s Grey clipping the heels of th? horse in front. There was a surprising incident in the Harris Memorial Hunters’ Hurdles when the favourite, Penryn, ran off between the hurdle at the winning post and the one near the seven furlongs. At the time Penryn was running strongly in the lead. Results: — * GREENMOUNT HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE, Of £6OO. About two, miles and a half. 2. 2—BROOKBY BOY 9-0 W. Caddy 1 1. I—Bagot 10-5 A. C.
