CANTERBURY PARK TROTTING CLUB

Sir.—At the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s annual meeting interesting figures were quoted on the cost to the club for each member’s badges, etc., as an excuse for increased subscriptions. The statement that the subscription should be £lO comes optimistically from an official of this club. It has no reputation for running attractive race meetings. It is even too tight-fisted to have a band playing on race days. A band helps to make a day at the races enjoyable. A race meeting, like any other enterprise, must be attractive to the customer. A much more interesting fact to know would be the cost to the trotting clubs of the alcoholic drinks served free to officials and their friends. This bar is a very busy place and must be a very expensive item. The almost indecent touting for votes before each annual meeting indicates how good the perks must be.—Yours, etc., MISERY FARM.

July 23, 1952. [The secretary of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club (Mr H. E. Goggin) had no comment to make when this letter was referred to him.]
