BALL AT FAIRLIE
DEBUTANTES PRESENTED A successful ball arranged by the Fairlie branch of the Returned Services’ Association was held in the Aorangi Hall, Fairlie, and was attended by about 800 visitors from all parts of South Canterbury. Ten debutantes, who had been trained by Mr, A B. Mackenzie, were presented by her to Lieutenant-Commander P. Gibson, officer commanding H.M.N.Z.S. Tasman, Lyttelton, and Mrs Gibson. Members of the official party included; Lieutenant-Commander P. Gibson and Mrs Gibson, Lieutenant A. Lambert, and Miss Cannon; Mr F. Daniel (president of the Fairlie Returned Services’ Association) and Mrs Daniel, Mr T. Creighton (secretary) and Mrs Creighton (president of the women’s auxiliary); Mr and Mrs A. B. Mackenzie, Mr A. Elliott (past president of the South Canterbury Returned Services’ Association) and Mrs Elliott; Mr P. W. J. Cockerill (vice-president of the South Canterbury Returned Services’ Association) and Mrs Cockerill; and Mr J. Little (president of the Geraldine Returned Services’ Association) end Mrs Little.
The debutantes were Misses Helen Mary Ross (Rollesby Valley), Shirley Johnston (Fair lie), Helen Brophy (Ashwick Flat), Helen Patricia Robinson (Winscombe), Ma'ry Gwendoline Bannerman (Fairlie), Kathleen Butler (Ireland), Norma Connolly (Fairlie), Margaret Frances Shaw (Fairlie), Clare Keenan (Fairlie), and Maureen Mann (Timaru).
