The appointments of Messrs C. Hilgendorf and H. R. Hardie as members of the Wheat Research Institute Com! mittee have been approved by the Minister in charge of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (Mr R. M. Algie). Mr Hilgendorf, who is a member of the Board of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, replaces Mr C. T. Aschman, who has retired as the college representative. Mr Hardie will represent the Federation of Master Bakers and PastrycooksJ of which he is president. Mr J. C. votton, the newly-appointed superintendent for mine rescue stations in New Zealand, has arrived from England. He will make his headquarters at Greymouth. Before his appointment by the New Zealand Government Mr Cotion was engaged in mine rescue work in England, with his headquarters at Staffordshire. He will take charge of the operations of the rescue «s stationed in various minifig its throughout New Zealand—(F.A.)
Mr Will Hutchens, formerly choirmaster of the Rugby street Methodist Church, where Mrs Hutchens was organist, has accepted a similar position at the Pitt street Congregational Church, Melbourne, as there was no opening for a choirmaster and organist in a Methodist Church near hig home in Melbourne. Mr Hutchens has also been engaged as a judge at the Wellington competitions and at the Queensland competitions.
Mr E. B. Jackson was recently appointed a subject specialist at the Canterbury Public Library. He will use his specialised training in business libraries to develop a service for commerce and industry in Christchurch. Mr Jackson is a Fellow of the English Library Association,, and was for some years in the library of the Institute of Bankers in England. The president (Mr H. C. Urlwin), the senior vice-president (Mr J. Bradley) and the secretary (Mr R. T. Alston) of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association left for Wellington last evening to attend a meeting of the New Zealand Manufacturer? Federation. To-day jhe federation will meet the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) to discuss exchange control.
Or. J. E. Jone* wai appointed last evening to represent the Christchurch City Council on the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council.
