T. JEFFERY’S GOOD ROUND IN MATCH PLAY (New Zealand Press Association) ’NEW PLYMOUTH, June 1. T. Jeffery (New Plymouth) headed the qualifiers in the North Island golf championships, which began on the New Plymouth Golf Club’s course yesterday. Today Jeffery completed the course in five under par in the second round of match play. A strong north-easterly wind and showers to-day made conditions trying. In the semi-finals to-morrow morning, D. L. Woon (Hamilton) will meet A. R. Kitto (Wanganui), and Jeffery will play B. M. Silk (Wanganui).

A 26-year-old American banker, Edward Harvie Ward, won the British amateur golf championship to-day, when he beat another American, Frank Stranahan, who has won the title twice previously, 6 and 5, in the 36-hole final at Prestwick, Scotland. It was Ward’s first visit to Britain. Some of the crowd of 4000 swarmed on to the green and carried Ward on their shoulders down the fairway. Stranahan has never played so badly in a big match. Ward was nervous until the thirteenth hole in the morning round, when he was 2 down.' Then he played great golf to win the next four holes in a row, and was 6 up at the twentyseventh. It was the fourth time in six years and the third in succession that two Americans had contested the final. Stranahan and Ward played accurate, unrelenting golf to win their quarterfinal and semi-final matches yesterday. Results yesterday were:— _ . „ , Quarter-finals. —Ward beat J.
