19th BATTALION REUNION

The annual meeting and reunion of the South Island branch of the 19tn New Zealand Battalion and Armoured Regiment Association was held on Saturday evening. Between 60 and 70 members from all parts of the island attended. Officers were elected as follows: president. Mr A. M. Everest; vicepresident, Mr C. L. Paterson; committee, Messrs F. Harvey, V. Anderton, W. Jarman, D. Bowen, I. Divehall, J. Newton, F. England, R. Smith, J. Meeking, M. Nash, and D. Hodge. Brigadier J. T. Burrows was the guest speaker, and the toast of the 19th Battalion was responded to by Mr H. N. Davis. Mr E. Townley of the 20th Regiment replied to the toast of sister associations proposed by Mr R. McLean. Mr B. Lenihan and Mr G. McMillan represented the 18th Regiment and the Returned Services’ Association respectively. The retiring president, Mr F. Harvey, reported that the unit memorial at Victoria Park was nearly completed. Four plots, each of 19 seedling trees of a species native to the Middle East, had been planted. A memorial rock of granite quarried from Marble Point, Hanmer, was now set in the hillside, and members would be advised of plans for. its dedication.
