WOMEN’S INDOOR BASKETBALL
CANTERBURY WINS SOUTH ISLAND TITLE Canterbury beat Nelson by 38 points to 37 in the final of the South Island women’s indoor basketball championships at the R.N.Z.A.F. Station, Wigram. on Saturday. Nelson combined well and was unlucky to loose. J. Brough and J. Ellis were the best scorers in the Nelson team and M. Wells earned applause for the manner in which she made play for the team. At half-time. Nelson was ahead by nine points. During the third quarter, Canterbury attempted to break past the excellent guard work of A. Kirby, the Nelson guard, but was unsuccessful. With three minutes of play left, Canterbury was down 11 points. The players concentrated their attacks away from Kirby, •nd sabred rapidly after a series of fast movements to give Canterbury the lead. Nelson tried hard, but was unable to bridge the gap. Final score Canterbury 38, Nelson 37. Otago had an easy win against Marlborough by 43 points to 24. V. Townsend scored 29 points, and B. Wilson scored 10. The outstanding player for Marlborough was V. Burtenshaw, who scored 13 points. Southland lost its first game against Nelson by 24 points to 22, but reached true form against South Canterbury. > Southland made the game fast and accurate shooting quickly piled up points.
Results were:— First round: Canterbury 30, South Canterbury 22; Otago 43, Marlborough 24; Nelson 24, Southland 22. Second round: Nelson 42, South Canterbury 18; Canterbury 23, Otago 22; Southland 40. South Canterbury 15. Final: Canterbury 38, Nelson 37.
The following players were selected for the South Island team to play a team from the South Island women’s Catholic basketball clubs: L. Luxton (captain), B. Tregoning, A. Kingsbury (Canterbury): L. Acker, N. Holloway, J. Watson (Southland); B. Hoare (Marlborough); A. McFarlane (South Canterbury); V. Townsend, N. bowling (Otago). Betty Rowe (Canterbury) qualified for the New Zealand referees’ ticket.
