ATOM EXPLOSION IN RUSSIA
(Rec. 7 p.m.) -LONDON, May 30. The “Daily Mail” to-day published what it claimed to be the first picture yet outside the Iron Curtain of what is alleged to be an atomic explosion m Russia.
The newspaper said the picture appeared in a Soviet magazine and purported to show the blasting of a passage by atomic power through the Altai Mountains in March, 1951, during the construction of the new South Siberian railway running parallel to the Moscow-Vladivostok line.
The magazine was smuggled into Munich.
The “Daily Mail” comments that Russia’s explosion could not appear more different from those carried out by the United States. The smoke billows up to a series of peaks, giving much the same effect as dynamite blasting on a large scale, whereas the American land explosions always had the appearance of an enormous mushroom.
The Russians say the smoke cloud reached more than 16,000 ft high. In the New Mexico tests the smoke clouds reached 40,000 ft.
