POTATO PRICES NEXT SEASON

GROWERS WANT EARLY ANNOUNCEMENT (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 30. Growers’ organisations have asked the Potato Board to arrange for an early announcement of next season’s prices, said the secretary of the board (Mr N. J. McHugh) to-day. “The cost of putting a paddock down in potatoes is considerable and not to be undertaken lightly. Growers are entitled to know bet>’e they commit themselves to this expenditure that they will at least get a reasonable return, should they survive the hazards attached to potato production.” said Mr McHugh. There had been reassuring reports that New Zealand need not ask Australia for supplies next year, provided a satisfactory price was announced prior to planting time, he said. The board says that the Department of Agriculture hopes to complete by June its revision of the cost estimate, which is used as a basis for determining growers’ prices. Provision will be made for all proved increased farming costs, Including the increased price for seed. Should the prices so determined fall short of what the board estimates is a sufficient price to induce farmers to produce more potatoes, the board will strongly recommend a further increase.
