VITAL STATISTICS
Fewer births were notified in May this year than in May of last year, according to the records of the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages at Christchurch (Mr A. A. Besley). The number of deaths was the same and marriages by the registrar showed a considerable increase. For the first five months of the year the number of births notified showed an increase on those in the same period of 1951, The number of deaths was fewer, ani the number o’ marriages by the registrar was slightly more.
Figures for May this year, with those for May, 1951, in parenthesis, are:— births, 332 (345); deaths, 176 (175): marriage notices, 125 (108); marriages by registrar. 37 (20). Figures for the first five months are:-births. 1757 (1739): deaths, 704 (775); marriage notices, 774 (803); marriages by registrar, 153 (149).
