PUBLIC MEETING TO BE CALLED
CITIZENS’ ASSOCIATION ACTION A public meeting is to be called by the Christchurch Citizens’ Association very Soon in ah attempt to find ways and means of restoring the Sign of the Kiwi “for the use and benefit of the Citizens Of Christchurch.” This
staterhent was made last evehihg by the chairman of the association’s general committee (Mr H. F. Smith) after the committee had met and discussed the future of the Sigh of .the Kiwi. The City Council obviously held the Sign Of tne Kiwi in trust, to preserve it for the citieens of Christchurch, Mr Smith said. The belated steps taken by the council to reinstate the building for occupation by an employeecaretaker fell far short of what the citizens of Christchurch were entitled to. Mr Smith said the meeting had decided unanimously to protest stfonglv against the council's -proposal and t'o ask that action on it be deferred until every possible way 'of restoring the building to its original purpose, a place for rest and refreshment for SUmihit tdad travellers, had been tested.
