LOCAL BODIES’ ACTIVITIES
M.P. URGES EXTENSION (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, May 12. Decentralisation of some of the Government’s activities, with more responsibilities for local bodies, was advocated by the member of Parliament for Invercargill (Mr Ralph Hannan) at a civic reception for the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) this morning. Mr Hannan said he thought that during the last 20 to 30 years there had been a tendency to centralise government. This was a mistake, he said. Discussing local bodies, Mr Holland said: “I hope the modern trend—the increase in the demand for national or central government resources—does not lose for the community the benefit of this vast network of local governments.” Local governments the county and borough councils, school committees, Plunket organisations, and so on—did not get the credit or recognition they deserved, continued the Prime Minister. Although the central Government wanted to keep out of local government affairs as much as possible, it still played a big part, especially in the provision of funds. The Government had the welfare of the community at heart, and it did not want to usurp local powers, he said.
