PINUS RADIATA TIMBER
TRADE URGED TO ADOPT BOTANICAL NAME (New Zetland Press Association) DUNEDIN. May 11. The term Pinus was an abomination which had been extended by laymen to include all exotic timbers in New Zealand, said the president of the New Zealand Institute of Foresters (Mr G. H. Hocking) at the annual conference of the institute at Tapanui on Saturday. The conference discussed a suggestion by the Director of State Forests fMr A. R. Entrican) that the botanical name. Pinus radiata. should be accepted as the trade name for the species. Mr Entrican said, in a letter read to the institute, that the Timber Merchants’ and Sawmillers' Federations had already agreed to accept this suggestion. After a discussion on Mr Entrican’s letter, the institute decided to seek a wider opinion by asking all the institute’s 191 members to submit their views on the use of the name, and also to invite comment by other trade organisations. Members expressed the view that the term Pinus would probably be used popularly for some time, but a distinction was necessary among the different species.
