HURUNUI RIVER POWER PLAN
COUNCIL SUPPORTS • INVESTIGATION A thorough examination of the hydro-electric potentialities of the Hurunui river is supported by the electricity committee of the Christchurch City Council. The committee, in a report to the council last evening, said: “The committee has noted with interest the report of the discussion by the Canterbury Progress League on the power possibilities of the Hurunui river. It wishes strongly to endorse the proposal made that a start should be made immediately with the collection of hydrological data about this river, so that a reliable examination of its power possibilities may be made in ample time to be available when a further development is required in the main portion of the South Island system,” the report said. The chairman (Cr. G. Manning) said it was desired to let the Government know that there was interest in the power potential of Canterbury itself. Cr. A. J. Smith said the irrigation possibilities of the Hurunui were also worth investigation.
Asked by Cr. J. Mathison, M.P., who would pay for the inquiries, Cr. Manning replied: “We anticipate—the Government.” s
