DEFENCE TREATY FOR EUROPE
(Rec. 8 p.m.) PARIS, May 9. The treaty for setting up the European Defence Community was initialled in Paris to-day by representatives of France, Western Germany, Italy, Belgium, Holland, and Luxembourg. If the draft is ratified by the six Sational parliaments—and the West rerman peace contracts go through— Germany will have the right to raise land, sea, and air forces for the first time since the Third Reich surrendered in 1945. Upon ratification, the six nations will pool their land, air, and coastal sea forces under a single general staff.
