COMPLAINT ABOUT A FACTORY
Sir.—Having the misfortune to live within sight and sound of Dominion Industries, Ltd., may I ask whether a change of fuel has recently caused the larger chimney to blacken and the great billowing clouds of smoke to become so very unpleasant? If the nuisance is to continue perhaps the directors could issue a small pamphlet giving direction for removing oily flecks from washing and send it to all housewives in the neighbourhood.— Yours, etc., RICCARTON SOUTH. May 5, 1952. [“There has been no change of coal, nor has there been any emission, this week, of the smoke complained of by the correspondent,” said the engineer of Dominion Industries, Ltd. (Mr N. J. Stick) when this letter was referred to him. “We have just completed the overhaul of two furnaces in the boilerhouse, and while one furnace was under repair, the other furnace had to carry a greater load. To carry this greater load it was stoked heavier and coal just added to the furnace would cause extra smoke. The load normally carried by both furnaces had to be carried by one when the overhauls were being effected. The coal that is being used is good quality, which was not the case last winter during the coal shortage, wjien some of the poorest quality coal was burned, and when we did not receive any complaints.’’]
