OAMARU CLUB’S MEETING

, TATSY HALL MAY WIN STAKES DEFENDANT FAVOURED IN HANDICAP A good field of two-year-olds is engaged in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes, the feature event at the Oamaru Trotting Club's winter meeting to-morrow. The absence of Rupee, winner of the Timaru Nursery Stakes and the New Zealand Welcome Stakes, Jaunty and Lodestar has robbed the race of considerable interest, but with horses of the calibre of Tatsy Hall, Air Command and Consul engaged, the race has an open appearance. The Oamaru-trained Tatsy Hall may be the favourite for the race. She showed gameness to finish second to the more experienced Rupee in the Timaru Nursery Stakes. A good type of filly by Dillon Hall from Mill Stream, the dam also of Springwater, she is raced in partnership by her trainer, R. J. Cleave, and Mr W HaU. Tatsy Hall looks to nave a bright future, and she should take part in the finish of tomorrow’s race. G. B. Noble will parade a useful bracket Air Command and Abbey Scott. The former finished a good third to Rupee and Qualified in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes. He raced very greenly there, and may show more improvement than most of Abbey Scott has Bh <>wn ability in his trials, and he wiU be a useful second string for the stable. C°. nB, & a half-brother to a good winner in Star Rosa, finished an unlucky fourth in the Timaru Nursery Stakes after meeting trouble in the early run?2 n wore speed than most of t h ®^ herß 2 f K hta a «®> hut he has been handicapped by nervousness at the start of his races. He has had a chance to freshen up since he last raced, and he . could easily upset calculations. A high opinion is held of Fairlead, a member of J. Young's team at Halswell. She showed great promise when educated at New Brighton by L. Davidson. She lost ground early in the Timaru Nursery Stakes, but ahpwed speed in the middle stages. She should be Improved by the run. and she may race well. Rhondic and Rowan Star have shown ability In recent weeks, and they are expected to do best of the others. However, their chances of beating Tatsy Hall, Air Command, or Consul do not look bright.

Chance for Defendant Although Defendant failed miserably on the first day of the recent Forburf Park meeting, she Is ’expected to make amends in the R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap, In which she will be handily placed on the front mark. The Noble Scott mare impressed when she won the Cheviot Cup in March. She worked well at New Brighton yesterday morning, and looked much better than she did when paraded at Dunedin.

Retard, winner of the New Zealand Pacing stakes at Addington recently, met trouble in her race at Dunedin. If she receives a reasonable run, she may be the hardest for Defendant to beat. The Radiant Walla mare is a grand stayer. She is expected to win her way to the best classes.

If Inglewood is in a generous mood, she will prove the hardest for Defendant and Retard to beat. The U. Scott mare has more ability than most in her class, but she is far from being reliable at the barrier.

Chief Lochlel is another capable but unreliable pacer. He is a half-brother by Light Brigade to another good pacer. Globe Direct. June Grattan has become solid in the last few weeks, and she will be well placed on the front mark. Cincinnatus. Rajah, and Dalgan Hall have the best prospects of the others. Bendemeer Stream Selected Bendemeer Stream, which finished a good third to Ice Drift and Fearless Peter at Ashburton last week, will probably be favourite for the Papakalo Handicap. The Springfield Globe mare has taken time to become solid, but she is likely to graduate from the intermediate classes quickly. Lady French, which is also engaged at the Amberley meeting, will be in demand

if she is started at Oamaru. She has been racing well lately, without much luck. She will need only to leave the mark reasonably well to have bright prospects.

i Milford Maid, a member of W. A. ; Thomas’s team at Washdyke, has compiled a fine record for consistency lately. In her last five starts, she has had one win and four second placings. At Ijpr most recent appearance, she came from a long way back to run second to Golden Lady In the Allenton Handicap at Ashburton. Dusky Logan, a maiden graduate at Ashburton recently, Romanesque. Trout Stream, and Waitutu are expected to do best of the others, but there is plenty of room for a surprise. The Trotters Damaskeen, which has improved with every race recently, is expected to prove too solid for the oppostion in the Innovation Handicap. Damaskeen is only a four-year-old. He is expected to reach the best classes. Black Pegasus, a member of R. H. Butterick’s team, is another likely improver. His recent efforts have been more than useful. Wee Raider is a solid trotter, and he will probably be one of the hardest for Damaskeen to beat. Madam Grattan, Beau Scott, Moccasin, and Idealist have the best form of the others. If Black Pegasus is able to get clear at the start of the Waikaura Handicap, the others will find him hard to catch. He is well placed on the front mark. Damaskeen is engaged again here, and a line on his prospects will be obtained in the Innovation Handicap. He should again make a bold showing. Fairy Dell, winner of the New Zealand Trotting Stakes last season, Wee Raider, Moccasin, and Pablo have useful efforts to their credit in recent weeks, and they may also show to advantage. The following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator:— Oamaru Juvenile Stakes: Air Command and Abbey Scott. Waikaura Handicap: Moccasin and Windydale. R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap: Plausible and Brooksby Hall. The double will be run on the McDowell Memorial Handicap and the Papakalo Handicap. Selections are:— 11.30 a.m.—Trial Handicap No. 1: Credit Chief, Drucilla, Regalia. 12.15 p.m.—lnnovation Handicap: Damaskeen, Black Pegasus, Wee Raider. 1.5 p.m.—R. A. McDowell Memorial: Defendant, Retard, Inglewood. 1.50 p.m.—Oamaru Juvenile Stakes: Tatsy Hall, Air Command bracket. Consul. : 2.35 p.m.—Trial Handicap No. 2: Young Sam, Marionette, Direct Issue. 3.25 p.m.—Papakalo Handicap: Bendemeer Stream, Lady French, Milford Maid. 4.10 p.m.—Waikaura Handicap: Black Pegasus, Damaskeen, Fairy Dell. 5 p.m.—C.
