STATE OF SCHOOL AT HALSWELL
FURTHER MEETING TO BE HELD COMMITTEE CONTINUING IN OFFICE Although, it has not received what it considers a satisfactory reply from the Canterbury Education Board, the Halswell School Committee has decided to remain in office in the meantime. At a meeting last Thursday evening, all members of the committee threatened to resign unless the Education Board gave a written promise within a week to provide temporary accommodation to relieve overcrowding in one classroom, and to make definite plans for rebuilding the old part of the Halswell School. The decision to continue in office was made last evening, when the committee was met by Mr A. McLagan, member of Parliament for the district, and Mr R. Gardner, chairman of the Halswell Ex-Pupils’ Association, who asked that the committee should carry on until parents and former pupils held a further meeting of protest about the school This meeting will be held at Halswell on Wednesday. Speakers said that, if the committee resigned, there would be no organisation through which the representations could be made to the education authorities.
