WAR MEMORIAL IN ITALY
MAYOR ENDORSES APPEAL The hope that the citizens of Christchurch would support the appeal of the New Zealand Committee of the Escapers’ Friends in Italy, which opened throughout the Dominion this week, was expressed yesterday by the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.). He said the appeal was for an extremely worthy cause, and therefore the City Council was co-operating with the organisers. Local subscriptions could be sent to the Treasury Department at the City Council Chambers, Manchester street. The appeal, which is for a proposed war memorial in “Boys’ Town,” Modena, Italy, will be conducted throughout tne Dominion for a fortnight. It is a gesture of thanks to Italians who risked their lives to shelter escaped Allied prisoners of war during the German occupation of Italy.
