TAXIWAYS AT AIRPORT

SEALING COMPLETED The sealing of the taxiways from the runways at Harewood Airport has been completed and a start will probably be made in the next few days on forming the connecting taxiways which will link the main taxiways with the tarmac in front of the hangars. The taxiways, which have been constructed to comply with International Civil Aviation Organisation regulations, run north-west and north-east, parallel with the two airport runways, and join the runways at their extremities. Although they can now be used by aircraft they have still to be treated with a plant-mix, more than 300 tons of which will be applied as a final coating next summer. The taxiways are 75ft wide, equivalent to about four motor highway widths. Work on the taxiways, about one mile of which have been completed, was done under contract to the Ministry of Works. The taxiway to feed the south-west arm of the main runway has not yet been formed as it has not been possible to obtain access to 20 acres of land bought for this purpose. It is expected that this work will be commenced soon.

When the connecting taxiways have been completed (they are to be sealed next summer) it will be possible for aircraft to land, refuel and take 9ft without touching grass. Heavy aircraft can taxi on the grass but in winter it can become badly churned up.
