WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

13 N.Z. SEATS FOR ASSEMBLY CHANGED DISTRIBUTION RECOMMENDED New Zealnad has been allotted tentatively 13 seats for official representatives at the second assembly of the World Council of Churches to be held at Evanston, Illinois, in 1954. The National Council of Churches will ask that the division of representation among the various denominations should correspond to the relative strengths of its constituent churches in New Zealand.

The Rev. Dr. W. A. Visser 't Hooft, in a preliminary letter, said that the following allocation for New Zealand had been suggested:—Church of England three, Presbyterian Church three. Baptist Church two. Congregational Church two, Methodist Church two, and Church of Christ one. It was assumed from part of the letter that New Zealand might be eligible to send one of the 10 Salvation Army delegates. The new scale of representation which the National Council of Churches will propose is: Church of England five, Presbyterian three, Methodist two. Baptist one, Church of Christ one, Congregational one, corresponding to numerical strength and representation on the New Zealand council.
