BY-ELECTION IN AFRICA

GUIDE TO POPULARITY OF DR. MALAN

CAPE TOWN, March 26. A coming by-election to the South African Parliament is expected to provide a reliable indication of how public opinion has reacted to the Prime Minister’s decision to challenge the sovereignty of the Supreme Court. The by-election has been caused by the death of Mr J. ,G. van Nieberk. Nationalist member for Wakkerstroom. The mountain town of Wakkerstroom, half-way between Durban and Johannesburg, has often in the past proved a sure guide to changes in support for South African political parties. Of 13 elections held at Wakkerstroom since the formation of the Union in 1910, the Nationalists hrve won six and the United Party or its predecessor, the South African Party have won seven.
