CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING HELD IN CHRISTCHURCH

“The New Zealand Federation of Chamber Music Societies has been a great help in the last year, and will make it much easier in future to arrange visits by outstanding overseas groups,’’ said Mr J. F. Skedden, president of the Christchurch Chamber Music Society, at the annual meeting of the society last evening. A visit by an unusual combination of chamber music artists had been arranged, said Mr Skedden. The artists were Adam Kriegel (violin), professor of the violin at the Melbourne Conservatorium, Jiri Tancibudeck (oboe), first professor of the oboe at the Sydney Conservatorium, and Vera Tancibudeck (piano), who studied at the Royal Academy of Music, and who had played as a soloist and as accompanist for her husband. The first concert in Christchurch by the trio would be on April 28.

Commenting on the annual report and balance sheet, Mr Skedden said they showed tfyat the society was in a much healthier position this year than last year. The membership had risen from about 144 to 310. There had been also a great improvement in the financial affairs of the society, and at least one large loan and part of another had been paid off. The development of chamber music in New Zealand was outlined in an address by Mr F. Turnovsky. president of the Wellington Chamber Music Society. Mr Turnovsky said that overseas chamber music groups should be encouraged to come to New Zealand. “Not too many, two a year may be, so that the achievement of our own artists may be compared with the performances of overseas artists.” he said. The following officers were elected: president. Mr Skedden; secretary. Miss A. Darwin; treasurer, Mr W. Sharp; committee, Mrs E. M. Trueman, Miss E. Livingstone, Dr. Vernon Griffiths. Messrs N. Vincent and L. E. Hunter.
