WINTER GAMES AT OSLO
FINN WINS SKI RACE
OSLO, February 20. Veikko Hakulinen to-day won the 50 kilometres cross-country ski race at the Winter Olympics, thus giving Finland her first gold medal of the games. His time for the 31 miles course was 3hr 33min 33sec. Thirty-five competitors representing 13 countries started in the event, which was over a tortuous course on the slopes above Oslo. A 19-year-old American, Mrs Andrea Mead Lawrence, won the women’s slalom event at Rodkleiva to-day. A few days ago Mrs Lawrence won the giant slalom event.
The New Zealander, Miss Annette Johnson, finished well back and was not given official timing, but she received a magnificent ovation from the crowd when the announcer called her “the girl who has come from exactly the opposite side of the world.”
