N.Z. ENGINEERING AWARD
HONOUR FOR MR J. B. C. TAYLOR
The Fulton Gold Medal, offered by the New Zealand Institution of Engineers for the best paper of the year by a corporate member, has been awarded to Mr J. B. C. Taylor, M.Sc., 8.E..A.M.1. Mech.E., senior engineer in the engineering research division of the Dominion Physical Laboratory, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The paper was entitled “Engineering Seismology in New. Zealand,” and the award was presented at the annual conference of the institution, held in Dunedin. . i Mr Taylor was educated at Wellington College, and he joined the Rail-
ways Department as an apprentice in 1932. He attended Victoria University College, and graduated M-Sc. in 1937. In 1938 Mr Taylor went to Canterbury University College on a Railways Department scholarship. He graduated B.E. in 1940.
After a short period in the Chief Mechanical Engineer’s office of the Railways Department, Mr Taylor joined the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and was engaged during the war, at the Radio Development Laboratory, on the production of radar equipment. In 1946 he was transferred to the Dominion Physical Laboratory. He has been engaged for the last two years on research on engineering seismology. This deals with the effects of earthquakes on buildings, and on other engineering structures.
