DUNEDIN WOOL SALE

PRICES DOWN 2} TO 5 PER CENT. QUALITY AFFECTED BY SPRING WEATHER (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, February 18. Wool prices dropped in all classes at the third wool sale of the season in Dunedin to-day. The bulk of the entry, which totalled 33,300 bales, was sold at prices which reflected a comparatively unfavourable season for the production of good wools. The finer wools were in better condition than some of the others, but even some of these were not up to the standard of those offered in the last sale. There was a full bench of buyers, but the sale dragged, with only occasional intervals of lively bidding between Bradford and the Continent for some of the finer lots. Growers were not happy as they noted that prices generally were even easier than at the Christchurch sale, while there was a substantial drop, particularly in fine wools, from prices realised in December. Crossbred wool was 3d to 4d lower, fine crossbreds 6d to 9d, and finer wools were from lOd to Is per lb easier. Continental buyers took most of the fine wool offered while Bradford was the largest buyer in the crossbred section. Local mills bought with caution and secured only occasional lots. Their hesitancy is probably connected with the lack of any definite word about subsidies. Those in the trade are hopeful that some statement may be made by the Prime Minister when he returns from abroad. Top price, for the day was 74d, secured by Mr A. R. McKay, of Tarr'as, for four bales of super quarterbred wool. Three bales of superfine halfbred made 72d and nine bales of super Merino made 70jd. Five bales of the same class hogget wool brought 70Jd. • Official Report The official report issued by the Dunedin Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the New Zealand Woolbuyers' Association and the New Zealand Wool Commission, states that the style and quality was not as good as usual because of the adverse spring season. There was a marked absence of competition from local mills, but buying was generally well spread, with the Continent and Bradford most prominent. Compared with the recent Christchurch sale prices on a clean basis• declined by 2) per cent, for halfbreds and 5 per cent, for crossbreds, the coarser wools being slightly dearer.
