CONFIDENCE IN GOVERNMENT

FRENCH VOTE ON WAGE REFORM (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) PARIS, Feb. 8. Mr Edgar Faure’s Government obtained a vote of confidence by 292 to 275 to-day on its wage reform bill, which aims to tie wages to the cost of living. Mr Faure snatched victory from what had seemed certain defeat by a private talk with Moderate Conservatives, who had announced during the debate that they would vote against the Government. The meeting split the group. About 15 voted for the Government, about 50 against and many abstained. Great difficulties are expected during the clause-by-clause debate on the bill, as the Cabinet has authorised the Prime Minister to put the confidence question on any amendment tending to weaken it.
