REARMING BY BRITAIN

Longer, Costlier Programme (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, February 5. The Prime Minister (Mr Churchill) told the House of Commons this afternoon that Britain’s £4,700,000,000 rearmament programme must now inevitably be spread over a longer period than the planned three years. Mr Churchill, who was replying to a question, said that he could give no definite date for the plan’s completion but he added that because of the diminishing power of the £, the programme would now cost something in the neighbourhood of £5,200,000,000. The Prime Minister recalled that the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr R. A. Butler) and he had told the House that production was already behind schedule, but he added that the Gov c ernment was pushing ahead to the best of its ability.
