FORBURY PARK MEETING

VEDETTE WILL HAVE GOOD PROSPECTS

DICTATION MAY BEAT TROTTERS

The meeting between such fine pacers as Vedette, Parawa Derby, Van Dieman, Johnny Globe, Maori Home, Blue Mist and Mighty Song in the Forbury Free-for-all will be one of the highlights of what promises to be a most interesting day’s racing when the Forbury Park Trotting Club opens its summer meeting to-day. Vedette, winner of the New Zealand Pacing Championship at the New Zealand Trotting Cup meeting in November, will probably be favourite for the race. He should be improved by his races at the Canterbury Park meeting, when he appeared unlucky not to finish closer than fourth in the Mason Handicap after receiving a poor run. He recorded 3min 25sec for the mile and five furlongs, a grand effort in the circumstances.

Parawa Derby, one of the best horses raced in New Zealand last season, resumed racing at the Canterbury Park meeting after being off the scene for some months. He will be back to his best again and he should add to his record here.

Van Dieman, winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup, is right back to his best and he will be entitled to strong support, as will Johnny Globe. The brilliant Logan Derby four-year-old has been unlucky to draw the second line, but he should race prominently nevertheless. Maori Home won two free-for-alls at the New Zealand Trotting Cup meeting and his recent track work suggests that he is as good as ever again. Blue Mist and Mighty Song showed worthwhile form at Auckland recently and they will need to show little improvement to take part in the finish. Vedette, Parawa Derby and Van Dieman, however, may have too much class for them. A grand field of straight-out trotters is engaged in the Otago Handicap, and betting will, probably, be well spread among Dictation. Highland Kilt, Gold Horizon, Signal Light, Single Task and Fair Isle. Dictation, winner of the New Zealand Trotting Free-for-all, has raced well from long marks in most of his races this season, and he has had one win and four placings from seven starts. Highland Kilt has been once unplaced In nine starts this term, and he has had three wins. He is very fit at present, and will be hard to beat to-day. Gold Horizon has had two wins and four placings in eight starts. The Quite Sure gelding haa been responsible for the fast times recorded in most of the major events for horses of his gait this season, and he will make certain that to-day’s race is a true test.

Signal Light is gradually returning to his best, and he has been placed at his three most recent appearances. Fair Isle graduated to this company at the Auckland Cup meeting when she had two wins and one placing in three starts. She is handily placed on the front and may show to advantage. Single Task and Two Step make most appeal of the others, but there is plenty at room for a surprise.

Riviera in Form Riviera is back to the brilliant form she displayed as a three-year-old last season, and she will be at a short price in the Dunedin Cup Handicap. She will only need to rate up to her best to win to-day. »J f u? s Y! era makeB toe slightest mistake Flight Commander is the one expected to take advantage of it. The Light Brigade five-year-old is one of the most promising stayers In commission, and he should make amends, for his miserable showing at the recent Canterbury Park meeting. Mobile Globe is racing more generously than he has for some time, and he wifi have to be respected. He will be popular with place investors, as will Blue Mist, which raced well at the Auckland Cup meeting last month. The Minor Events Palava, Novelda and First Mate will probably be the most favoured candidates in the New Year Handicap, but there IS plenty of room for a surprise. The prospects of Relight, Sandy Logan and Fanciful are also highly regarded. The brilliant four-year-old. Radiant Night, is expected to prove too good for the field in the Summer Handicap. He may receive most opposition from Denbry. Venetian. Inquisitive Lady and the consistent Tiberius. t Prince Recent should win the Musselburgh Handicap even though he has not raced for some time. It is unfortunate that he is unsound or he would have won his way to a tight mark before now. Flagship. First Victory, Senate, and Corunna will have bright prospects of reaching a place. Punt Monte Casino and Ferry Walla are a likely trio for the Electric Handicap. Most opposition to them may come from Anitra. Jack's Mistake and Luck Ahead,

The Vauxhall Handicap bears a very open appearance, and there may be a surprise. Indomitable, Black Sentinel, Admiral Cane and Kakahu Pride are expected to show to advantage. PLANS FOR WAIKATO HORSES

OUR SMITH AND INDIAN GAME Our Smith and Indian Game, Waikato candidates for the Inter-Dominion ChamS ionships to be run at Harold Path, ydney, towards the end of next mon.n. will leave Auckland on February 5. No final decision has been made about Petite Yvonne, but if she makes the trip she will also leave on February 5. Our Smith will be in the care of his Pokeno owner-trainer, E. R. Smith, and F. Smith, Jun. will probably go to Sydney to drive him. Our Smith's form has been only moderate this season, and in eight starts he has had one win and three placings. At his most recent appearance he finished third to Shirley Lawn and Logan Flame in the New Year Handicap at the Auckland Cup meeting, recording 3min 12 3-ssec for the mile and a half. Our Smith will be accompanied by the improver, Cumana, a four-year-old mare by Peter Smith-and Powerful Lady, which has Included the New Zealand Oaks at New Brighton last month among her successes this season. Both will race in minor events at the championships. Indian Game, which will be in the care of his Frankton owner-trainer, F. V. Cutts, will be accompanied by Gold Dale, Ellicott, and Stylemaster. Indian Game has failed to reach a place in eight starts this season, but last term he had one win and six placings in 13 starts. His prospects on the small, turning Harold Park track do not appear to be very bright. He is an ajed gelding by Indianapolis from Gold The King Scott trotter, First Scott, will also leave for Sydney on February 5 In the care of his Auckland owner, Mr G. H. Mitchell. Although there is no trotting championship, there jure several suitanle races for him during the carnival. He will go. into a Sydney stable for the meeting. First Scott would have little difficulty paying expenses on the trip a* he is about average. He has had one win and six placings In seven starts this season, and with a little luck his record would have been even better. His performance* have been far above those of the horses he will meet in Sydney. Canterbury Park Club Nominations for all events at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting to be held on Saturday, February 9, will close at 5 pan. on Monday. Advt.
