NEW GOVERNORGENERAL
CANADIAN SUCCEEDS LORD ALEXANDER LONDON, January 24. Mr Vincent Massey, the former Canadian High Commissioner in London. has been appointed GovernorGeneral of Canada, succeeding FieldMarshal Lord Alexander, who is to resume “other responsibilities,” it was officially announced in London tonight. It has been widely reported that Field-Marshal Alexander is likely to become Defence Minister in Mr Churchill’s Cabinet. Mr Massey is the first Canadian toi be appointed Governor-General of Canada. A Privy Councillor since 1941, and a Companion of Honour since 1946. Mr Massey has had a distinguished career. He was born at Toronto in 1887 and
was educated at St Andrew’s College, Toronto, and the University of Toronto, where he obtained his B.A. degree. He gained his M.A. at Balliol College. Oxford. He was a lecturer in modern history at Toronto Un , versity until World War I. Appointed Minister without portfolio in the Canadian Cabinet in 1925, he attended the Imperial Conference in London in 1926. He served as the Canadian Minister to the United States from 1926 until 1930. and as High Commissioner for Canada in the United Kingdom between 1935 and 1946. He was the Canadian delegate to the League of Nations Assembly in 1936.
