WELLINGTON CARNIVAL NINE PROVINCIAL RECORDS BROKEN (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 20. Junior and Intermediate swimmers broke nine provincial records when the Wellington Swimming Centre’s carnival was held at the Thorndon Baths on Saturday evening. In the 100 yards junior girls’ freestyle, F. Drake (Martinborough) and F. Hale (Petone) broke the record of 77.8 sec in their heats. In the final, Miss Drake set a new mark of 74.8 sec. She also equalled and reduced the 50 yards standard time in her heat and the final. It is believed that she will be entered for the national junior championships at Lower Hutt. As a sequel to his reduction of the provincial 100 yards intermediate freestyle record last Thursday, J. Hamilton (Hutt) beat his own Wellington intermediate 220 yards record of 2min 35.45ec by four seconds. Hamilton coveted the first 100 yards in 60sec, the former record for the 100 yards. J. Barrell (Hutt), who Is 14, clipped a second off the 100 yards junior freestyle mark of 69sec.

B. Chapman cut two seconA; from the provincial 100 yards intermediate backstroke record of 78.6 sec. G. Martlew (Hutt) set a new provincial intermediate 220 yards breaststroke record of Cmin 9.4 sec. It was llsec less than the previous record. He covered the first 100 yards in 81ec.

NATIONAL WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS MISS W. GRIFFIN UNABLE TO COMPETE (Neto Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 20. Because of an ear infection which has troubled her for several months, the national women's swimming champion and Olympic Games candidate. Miss W. Griffin. of Auckland,, has withdrawn from the national championships at Hamilton next month. Her last swim at anything close to her best standard was in winning the New South Wales 110 yards championship last summer. Since then she has had several illnesses, and she severely sprained an ankle when doing light training recently.

J. JARVIS NOT COMPETING IN CHAMPIONSHIPS (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 20. .J. Jarvis, formerly of Otago, and recently of Auckland, has not been nominated for the national junior swimming championships. In which he was a titleholder over several distances. He has made no move to enter for the senior

national championships, entries for which close in about a fortnight.

Jarvis is now living with his family on Waiheke Island Since arriving in Auckland from Dunedin a few weeks ago, ne has not taken part in swimming events, and has made no approach to Auckland officials about the championships. Entries for the junior championships have closed. Jarvis has been rated as an Olympic prospect.
