TROTTING TACTICS WINS AT TIMARU
AEROGARD FINISHES SECOND WINCHESTER HANDICAP TO INGLEWOOD Tactics won her third race for the season when she lasted long enough to hold off a strong challenge from Aerogard in the South Canterbury Handicap, the main event and first leg of the double on the final day of the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Washdyke on Saturday. She was capably handled by M. Holmes, who had her alongside Schwanda at the straight entrance. Schwanda did not run on as well as expected and Tactics appeared likely to have a comfortable win until Aerogard challenged. Tactics, I a flveryear-old mare by Light Brigade from Nell Grattan (the dam also of Mighty Song and Mighty Imp), owned at Wyndham by Mr A. Wilson, hag taken time to become solid since being trained in Canterbury and now that she has struck form she should win again soon. A6rogard, which is owned in Christchurch by Mrs N. Snell, resumed racing only last Saturday and in two earlier starts at the meeting she had finished on for second place. She was made second favourite for the Pukaki Handicap, and she gave an outstanding performance to win. She came from a long way back and finished with great courage in the straight. She was patiently handled by G. Cameron and looks as though she will win again in the next few weeks. In a pool of 14,032} 10s tickets on the first leg of the double, 1732} were invested on Tactics. Six tickets were not redeemed and 327} tickets were placed on Inglewood, winner of the Winchester Handicap, the successful combination returning £35 8s for £l. The meeting was held in fine weather before a large attendance. The track was in splendid order. The totalisator investments, a record for the course, amounted to £67,189 15s, including £7016 5s on the double. There was no meeting last year for comparison. The total for the two days was £131,023 15s. Tactics Holds On Tactics was a little slow at the start of the South Canterbury Handicap, but she was never far from the leaders. She moved out from the rails with one mile to run and moved round to challenge the pacemaker, Schwanda. near the straight entrance. They turned for home clear of Aerogard, with two lengths to Diamed. Barney Grattan, Peter Grattan, Corunna ished very fast. Schwanda began better with one furlong to run. Aerogard finished with a strong, late run, and looked as though she might catch Tactics at one stage, but the last-named came again and held on by a neck. Aerogard’s was a sound effort. She did not receive a good run, and she finished very fast. Schwanda began better than usual, and he was rushed into the lead with seven furlongs to go. He was well beaten at the straight entrance, but held on for third two lengths in front of San Fernando, which made up ground. Crafty Guy, which broke at the end of one furlong, was fifth, ahead of Diamed, Corunna, Officious and Authie (ih line). Authie, Tribal Song, Regal Parade. Alluck and Dourglo lost ground at the start. Royal Brigade broke badly and took no part in the race. Dourglo fell with seven furlongs to run. Inglewood Succeeds •' Inglewood recorded a grand performance to win the Winchester Handicap. She was slow away and raced in the middle of the field for the race. She was still a good way fr®i the leader at the straight entrance, where Isa Lei still had charge three lengths in front of Colleague, Jack's Mistake, Helen Grattan and Inglewood. The last-named took control inside the furlong and looked in for an easy win until Helen Grattan challenged. Inglewood held on gamely to win by two lengths from Helen Grattan, which had been handy throughout. El Supremo came from well back for third in front of the unlucky Chief Lochiel, which had been checked in the early running and again when Anitra broke near the straight entrance. He finished very fast and should soon win. He was followed by Isa Lei, Jeopardy, and Imperial Lord.
Queen of Scots and Wrackdale were also checked when Anitra broke, Son’s Gift and Bronzette were among those to lose all chance at the start. Well Deserved Win Aerogard, which had been twice placed at two earlier appearances at the meeting, her only races for the season, gained a well-deserved win in the Pukaki Handicap. She appeared to be in a hopeless position with four furlongs to run. when she was at least 10 lengths from the leaders. At tire straight entrance Diamed waff shading Walnut Jimmie with Grenade handy and a gap of three lengths to Archaic, San Fernando and Aerogard. Archaic and Diamed looked as though they would dispute the finish until Aerogard came on the scene. The Dillon Hall mare gained the upper hand just short of the post, and she came on to win going away by half a length. Archaic did well to finish second. He was well back early, but finished on better than usual to take second place by from the tiring Diamed. After an inquiry Archaic was disqualified and Daimed was placed second, Grenade third and Walnut Jimmie fourth. Grenade, which appeared to be running y as a len B»h back ahead of Walnut Jimmie, which had every chance, San Fernando and Dark Water. Results:—
