BOWLS N.Z. TOURNAMENT CONTINUED

E. Ravenwood Wins Pairs Semi-Final EIGHT TEAMS LEFT IN FOURS (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 20. The twelfth day of the New. Zealand bowling championships on Saturday brought the fours competition to the quarter-final stages. By the end of the afternoon, four rounds of post-section play had been decided, and the 360 teams who started off on Monday had been reduced to eight. Games in the fours on Saturday were played on the Caversham, St. Kilda, and Ealmacewen greens. Space was reserved on the Balmacewen green for those still surviving in the pairs and singles. The availability of the players for the singles depended on the eliminations from the fours'of S. Longworth '(Nelson), F. Livingstone (Onehunga), and T. T. Skoglund (Otahuhu). Longworth had been drawn to meet Skoglund in the twelfth round of the singles, and Vella and Livingstone Were together in the pairs. Although the day was fine and sunny, a breeze added to the difficulties of the players and in several instances tested their skill to the fullest. The greens, after overnight rain, had first-class surfaces, and were playing true. They had apparently lost none of their keenness. One of the outstanding features of the tournament was the great bid for victory by A. J. Robinson’s Hokonui team when it met the Onehunga four skippered by F. Livingstone. Although Livingstone came from behind to win, 24-20, the losers shared the honours of a tenseley contested game. The only game played in the pairs competition was between the Northeast Valley combination of R. K. Aitchison and E. H. Ravenwood, the only surviving two-lifers, and C. Gardiner and S. Warren (Logan Park). The North-east Valley team won this semi-final, 14-13. Although two games are still outstanding in the pairs, Ravenwood enters the final with both lives intact. Surviving Fours Fours which have qualified for further play in the fours championship are: Otahuhu.—A. Murdoch, H. L. Rule, J. Morris, T. T. Skoglund (skip). Onehunga J. W. T. Macklow, H. A. Robertson, S. Vella, F. Livingstone (skip). Stratford.—N. M. Johnston, W. J. Ashton, M. J. Squire, K. S. Ewing (skip). Kaituna.—A. Morrison, W. F. Forrester, H. S. Reid, F. L. Taylor (ekip). Tuakau.—L. P. B. Hilton, C. J. Rogers, G. Crough, J. Pirret (skip). Napier.—W. J. Stone, R. Sutherland. D. F. Haggerty, A. C. Snaddon (skip). Bluff.—T. Stanley, J. Dixon, W. Parry. A. G. Beal (skip). Roslyn.—T. A. Johnston, J. Marshall, D. J. McNab, W. J. McKay (skip). The geographical representation of the remaining eight teams is: Auckland 3. Otago 2, Taranaki 1, Hawke's Bay 1, and Southland 1. C. H. Klnzett (Maltal) completely overwhelmed S. C. K. Smith (Waverley). whose team appeared to be able to do nothing right. The game finished on the twentieth end with the score 36-4 against Smith.

W. J. McKay (Roslyn) and C. L. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.) had a close battle at the start, but after the twelfth head McKay drew away, and won 27-18. T. G. Anderson (Kaikorai) fought a losing battle against A. G. Beal (Bluff) from the sixth end on, and conceded the game with the score at 25-10 on the twentythird. V. C. Potter (Tauranga), with G. G. Littlejohn as lead, got away to an early start against F. Mitchell (Tahunanui), 7-0 on the fifth end. Mitchell then got 3, only to lose 4 on the eleventh end. Low scoring from then on improved Potter’s margin to 18-11 on the eighteenth, after which Mitchell could get only three singles to resign the game on the twentyfourth end. Potter won 24-14. At the St. Kilda green. T. T. Skoglund (Otahuhu) continued his sequence of wins by beating T. L. Floyd (Canterburvi. 23-5. The game was more interesting than the score indicated, because the points scored except on one end which yielded three, were either singles or twos. F. Livingstone (Onehunga) beat W. O’Neill (Carlton), 29-17. In the early stages of the ga«ne between K. S. Ewing's Stratford four ahd F. Stanley (Mornington), the Stratford team established a good lead of 14-2 on the ninth end. Two good fours by Stanley’s men brought the Momington team witnin two of its opponent’s score. Again Ewing forged. ahead, but Stanley fought back to be 7 down with two ends to play. He scored two on the second last end, but had to submit to defeat when Ewing scored a single on the last end. Except for a few ends in the middle of the game, A. J. Robinson (Hokonui) was always in the lead against A. W. Ball’: Christchurch R.S.A. four, and won comfortably. 27-18. M.'Marinovich (Oratia) early established a commanding lead over J. Roach (Mar tinborough), and at the end of the tenth end he was 17 to his opponent’s four. Roach staged a good recovery, scoring e four, a two, and another two on succeeding ends to reduce his deficit to five at the twentieth, and the score was in favour of the Oratia four by six points. Roach scored twos on the next two ends to be only 4 down when the last end was played. An excellent shot by Roach with the last bowl of the game left the issue in doubt until the measurer had decided the result. Roach had. scored three, thus losing by one. J. Hannan Beats J. J. Haggle In a closely contested game the Te Rangl (Invercargill) four skipped by J. Hannan beat J. J. Haggle (Palmerston) by one point. F. L. Tayior (Kaituna), on the Caversham green, outplayed, W. Freeth (Nelson) and won, 29-15. J. Pirret (Tuakau) was too strong for D. N. Adams (Kia Toa, Timaru), altnough the latter played good bowls. The score was 23-14. Another team which has been noted for its steadiness throughout the fours competition is that skipped by L. Brough (National Service, Hastings). His four beat the Edgeware combination of 1. Chinnery, 33-16. A. C. Snadcjon (Napier) regained real touch when playing on the Caversham green to score a good win over J. A. Adams (St. Kilda), 24-13. A match which drew a large gallery in the fourth round was between A. J. Robinson's Hokonui four and F. Livingstone’s Onehunga combination. Taking command of the game from the first end, V. H. Drummond consistently outdrew his opposing lead, J. W. T. Macklow, and the Hokonui team went away to a 10-3 lead ai the sixth end. By the sixteenth end Hokonui had gained its greatest advantage, being 17-9 up. From that stage on, the Onehunga four gradually assumed command, and drew level on the twenty-second end. A one on the next end put the Hokonui team ahead, but on the twenty-fourth, In endeavouring to take off a counter against him, Steel removed two of his own bowls, and he carried the jack across to his opponents’ bowls to leave them lying 5 Livingstone drew a further one, and Robinson was unable to change the position, so that he was left 5 down and one end to play. In spite of a valiant attempt to draw the shots necessary to keep the game alive, Robinson found this leeway too rquch. He was able, however, to score one. The final score was 24-20 in Livingstone’s favour. Playing steadily from the outset in their fourth round game against J. Hannan’s Te Rangi team at St. Kilda, K. S Ewing’s Stratford four went away from their opponents to have a lead of 10 on the eleventh end, but on the sixteenth end, when Hannan was 10 down, A. V Keast trailed the jack with a beautiful shot to score a 5. On the twenty-first end, with Hannan still 6 dpwn, Squire played a spectacular drive to get his four out of. an intricate position. The Stratford four won, 25-18. From the opening stages of play T. T Skoglund (Otahuhu) took charge in his game against M. A. Marinovich (Oratia), and won comfortably, 35-16. The steadiness of the Otahuhu four was too much for the Oratia team. The fourth round game between F. J. Taylors Kaituna four and G. A. Fortune (Opoho) was all square after 24 ends had been played, but Taylor scored a single on the last end to win, 24-23. J. Pirret (Tuakau) won fairly comfortably against W. C. F Edgar’s Tainui four 27-14. Pirret scored steadily, and his team drew well A. C. Snaddon (Napier) beat the National Service four skipped by L. Brough Brough’s men were unable to find touch in their drawing and did not reproduce their form of the previous round. Snaddon played excellent bowls, and his team won, 31-10. A. G. Beal’s Bluff team outplayed V. C Potter’s Tauranga combination to win by 11 points FOURS COMPETITION THIRD ROUND St. Kilda Green T. T. Skoglund (Otahuhu) 23, T. Lt Floyd (Canterbury), 5; F.
