In smX final matches played at the park yemS day in fine weather, C. Parker ii>3 land) beat J. Montgomerie (AurltiSg fairly quickly and easily in straight Mg and Miss P. Nettleton (Auckland) hadS work hard when she met Miss B. NtM (Wellington), but finally won in strj® sets. To-day Parker will play D [5 ! (Auckland), who beat the CantertaH junior champion, G. W. Lane, in strahH > sets on Thursday, and Miss Nettleton wS meet a fellow member of the AucklaS ‘ Howe Shield team. Miss R. Dickson T Two finals were decided yesterday w Wrathall (Auckland) beat B. Brook* (Otago), aftei; a hard three-set matchfi the national under 16 singles ship, and Sonia Cox, a brilliant schoolgirl, who was 15 on Christmas SS had no opposition from Miss A. Brunt the Wellington secondary schools’ chk® i pion of champions, in an exhibition maM which decided the under 16 girls’ title™ As well as the singles. Auckland plawn will have a monopoly of most other' fitul matches to-day. In the mixed doulM title match, Parker and Miss NettleM will play Lye and Miss Dickson, afi3 these tour players have decided tS singles championships among them, LA and Parker will combine againat a W»L lington pair, T. Darrock and M. Dunn M : the boys’ doubles title, and two AucHm ■ girls, Misses H. Bradley and V. Teat wn meet Misses Dickson and Nelson in tt* final match for the girls’ doubles title. ■ I Seeded players have not been very cessful in the tournament. Both ainaft finals will be played by seeded playwt but unseeded players had to be elimlnaW in two of the tour semi-finals. In baS the girls’ doubles and mixed doubles i tions, unseeded pairs will contest the find matches, and at least one of them hS every chance of winning. In the giS doubles section, two of the eight seeded pairs were eliminated in the first round and another three pairs did not surviS second round games. Five of the elm seeded pairs In the mixed doubles did nd get past their second round contests i» the boys’ doubles, seedings were mon accurate, all selected players the third round, and the final will be d». cided between two seeded players. ■ Parker Beats Montgomerie The match between Parker and Mont. 1 gomerie did not last long. Both plann came to the net at every opportunity and their tactics at all times were re.' markably similar. . Though Montgomery ! won only four games in the match, he wat not disgraced In defeat, and he stntt form first, breaking through Parker’s rer. 1 vice and holding his own to lead 3-1 i> the first set. The next game went to deuce five times on Parker’s service before the scores became even. From this stall Parker took the initiative, and Mont, gomerie won no more games until he took the match game on his service. Montgomerie’s play deteriorated to. wards the end of the first set, and hit points came mostly from Parker’s Ire. quent errors. Parker’s visible and audible exasperation at these errors caused some merriment among the spectator and it made Montgomerie’s coolness aeon the more worthy by contrast. Miss Nettleton was able to beat Mia Nelson without having to come to the net very often, and she scored almon all her points with perfectly-execuM ground strokes. She angled her drives ta ' alternate corners much better than her opponent, who kept a good length after a bad start in the first set, but drove sufficient winners. The match was not as one-sided as the score, 6-1, 6-3, indicates, however, ant Miss Nelson broke through the Auckland girl’s service in the second set to tala the lead at 2-1. This was only a tempoN ary recovery, and she took only one mot» game in the match. The contest w« marked by particularly long rallies, and at match point there was the longest rally of all, the two girls hitting the ball* times tor long journeys from corner to corner until Miss Nelson finally netted. Brilliant Under 16 Girl Sonia Cox beat Miss Brunt in short order to take the final under 16 giri’ singles title match at 6-0, 6-0. and added two more to a succession of sets won to love in the tournament. She has playM five singles matches, and has lost onlf seveh games while winning 60. Wrathall lasted better in his mated with Brookes for the under 16 boyf singles title, though he probably raa twice as far in the contest. He was tireless in chasing Brookes’s accurate lobt, and he scored many points with ibon which a more energetic Brookes midht have retrieved. Once Wrathall got Mak to a good lob, and passed Brookes With an unexpected and finely-placed drive down the line. This matdh produced better tennis than has been seen <in meet of the contests tor the under IB title, and Brookes should be pleased that te has been able to take to three sets a player who was chosen by Dinny Pafle last season as one of the two most promising junior players he had coached in ' Auckland. The other boy was Lye, who will contest the boys’ singles title matth 1 to-day against Parker. An unseeded girls’ doubles comblnstlaa, Misses H. Bradley and V. Teat (Auckland) caused some surprise when they beat a seeded pair, Misses H. Bell and B. Catley, also of Auckland, in three sets of a girls’ doubles semi-final match. Both matches in the boys’ doubles al« went to three sets, but the result* were no more than was expected. Boys’ Singles Semi-final.—C. Parker (Ak.) beat JMontgomerie (Ak.). 6-3, 6-1.
