WELLINGTON CUP TO-DAY

DALRAY SHOULD BE FAVOURITE hands off may win TELEGRAPH (From Our Own Reporter) •w «. WELLINGTON, January 18. ■North Island stables will provide 18 of the 24 runners in the Wellington cup at Trentham to-morrow, but their superiority in that respect may end at that. Dalray and My Hero, and to a i® sse L e * tent Royal Tan and Spice, should be capable of equal, if not better, staying performances than the North Island horses. Nothing has happened in the training to supplant Dalray in public favour, even though the Auckland pair, Akbar and Classowa were outstanding in their final trials on Thursday. connexions are confident th^ t a^ elr i/°A Ur 'y? ar " old can complete ffic a 1? The Lo rn- gar y mar e is probably better equipped for a two mile test than she was a year ft?°'»T S 1 nc< r. fi] en she has run fourth in the New Zealand Cup, and it would be unwise to disregard her prospects She will have the expert services of L. J. Ellis, who understands her thoroughly. Summing up Dalray is expected to be the hardest to beat if in his long powerful challenge from the tail of the field he dodges trouble from tiring horses. My Hero and Rev may make Dalray work hardest for victory’, although Rev will go °« l ?L favour slightly if the track is affected by rain.

The Sprinters The Telegraph Handicap forms the second leg of the double with the Wellington Cup. The brilliant Lord Moss, winner of this race last year, appeared to be on the verge of a breakdown after working yesterday. The trouble is in the hoof of the near foreleg and is thought to be a stone bruise. Walking and cantering this morning he showed no sign of favouring that leg, although his hoof was padded. He is expected to start, but there could be a recurrence of the soreness.

Hands Off, which brilliantly won two races at the Manawatu Christmas meeting, will probably be the favourite. South Island hopes for victory rest mainly with Lord Fort. Spectral, and Declare. , Te Marua High-weight Lord Saracen, a three-year-old son of Contact, raced by Mr W. S. Goosman, is selected to win the first race, the Te Marua High-weight Handicap. Bought for a jumper, Lord Saracen should build up a good record before he is tried in that role. He won the high-weight nt Hastings at his last start. Sly Gold, a good performer in this type of race, and Mightgo, the only South Islander in the field, may fare best of the others, although the large field leaves room for a surprise. Wellington Stakes Upright and Anand, the best two-year-olds of the season, will meet again in the Wellington Stakes. Upright had the measure of his stablemate in the two races they contested at Ellerslie, but if track work is reliable, Anand may turn the tables to-morrow. Gold Command, winner of the two races he has started in, and Impress, which was much superior to the other youngsters in the Welcome Stakes at the New Zealand Cup meeting, strengthen the two-year-old representation, and Golden Galleon and .company will have to be good to extend the record of the three-year-olds. Pencarrow Hack The Washdylte-trained Debenture, winner of three of his last five races, should be very prominent in the finish of the Pencarrow Hack Handicap if he begins quickly from .No. 19. The Otakitrained John Gilpin, like Debenture, is a candidate with success at his last two starts, and he will probably be the favourite and Debenture's strongest rival. Misprint, winner of two races on the Taranaki holiday circuit, may be the best prospect of the others, with more than 8-0. Nearer the minimum, the Rlccartontrained Gardez, a winner at Wlngatui, is favoured most. Two-year-old Fillies The two-year-old fillies are catered for in the Fitzherbert Handicap. With Atlantic Queen and Regal, prospects of a south success look fairly good, though they will have formidable opponents in King's Lady and Menaka. King's Lady, a daughter of Sun King and Lady Rampion, won at Waikato earlier in the season and at her last start she was placed at Ellerslie. Menaka, which is by Neptune from Sakuntala, was an unlucky third at Awapunl at her last start; and she won at Woodville earlier in the season. She will be bracketed with Tudor Style, which Is speedy but a bit ' wayward. Camp Handicap The Camp Handicap, the race for hacks and apprentice riders, lacks an outstanding form horse. The long Trentham straight should be to the liking of the Riccarton-trained Black Wealth, a highweight winner at the New Zealand Cup meeting. The big Coronach gelding raced well but with little luck on the North Otago holiday circuit, and the roomier Trentham track should help him to show more of his real ability. The consistent Topmast, the top weight t with 9-1, is expected to make another sound showing, and so. too. should Milosn, winner of his last two races. Ulster Queen was caught a few strides short of the post by War Game in this race last year. The Riccarton-trained Defaulter mare should be improved by her race at the second meeting at Washdyke, where she was a minor place-getter.

t Anniversary Handicap Coral Arc is an unlikely starter in the Anniversary Handicap. He has some heat in the leg injured on his last trip to Trentham in the spring of 1950, and it may prevent him from racing at the meeting. ’ , ~ , .... Betting on this race should be well spread, with favouritism likely to be disputed bv Foxshar (bracketed with Hutton), Ozami, and The Lum. If there is a form upset it may be provided by Detention, a winner at the New Zealand Cup meeting and a good second in the Ku row Cup at his last start.
