MAN DROWNED WHILE FISHING
(New Zealdrld Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 13. 9 A membfer of a party of seven men net fishing at the Opunake beach on Saturday night was swept away by • strong current and is believed to have been drowned. He was Mr James Smith, aged 31, married, of Lower , Glenn road, Kaupokonui. The body has not been found. The party Was fishing neat thfe tailrace Of the Opuhake Electric Power Board’s power Statidh. During the second drag of the net the strong current caused several members of the party, including Mr Smith, to Ibse their footihg. Mr Smith appeared to be in difficulties, and some of the men at the net went to assist him. They lost contact With him in the heavy seas, ana could not find him. The strong current ; fading light, and dangerous position, the teen themselves were in made » necessary for them to return to tne shore. Observers on (he beach promptly sounded the surf alarm, and soon me®" s bers of the Opulfttke Surf Club were w action with two reels.
