TRANSTASMAN YACHT RACE
KURREWA 111 MAKES LANDFALL
23 MILES FROM CAPE REINGA LAST NIGHT
(New Zealahd Press Assdciatibn) AUCKLAND, January 13. Kurtewa 111, a Competitor in the traits-Tasman yacht race from Hobart to Auckland, was only 25 miles frotn Cape Reinga, having made a landfall at dusk, said the Whangarei correspondent of the ‘‘New Zealaffii Herald” W-night. tn a conversation with Mr A. C. Ross, the keeper oi the lighthouse, the crew of the craft stated that they were pleased to make landfall and that all on board were in good health and spirits. At that stage the Kurrewa was running at from six to seven knots with all Sails set tb a light south-west breeze. During the day the Norfolk Islands National Airwavs plane had gone down to about iOo feet and circled the yacht. The yawl Margaret Rihtoul Was abotit 70 miles astern and although the other boats could hot be heard, Mt Ross this morning heard the Ladybird talking to a steamer and giving her position as 280 miles from Cape Reinga. Mr Ross has not been able to make contact with the Margabet Rintoul but hopes to do so to-mortow. Nb information’ has been received about the other three yachts, Bounty and Gesture (N'-w Zealahd) ahd LahSba (Australia, since the race started. All are carrying small emergency sets and would not be able to communicate with the Kurrewa except at a very short distance.
