TROTTING BIG DOUBLE AT TIMARU
DIVIDEND OF £5521 FOR £1
CURIOSITY SURPRISES IN HOLE MEMORIAL
Curiosity, the 11-11 favourite in a field of 13 in the John Hole Memorial Handicap, the feature event on the opening day of the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Washdyke ori Saturday, caused a major surprise when she led throughout and held on to ' beat the fast-finishing Inquisitive Lady by a short length. Curiosity, which is owned by Mr H. L. Clarkson, is trained at Winchester by T. H. Gunning, who will leave at the end of the month for Sydney with Ada Scott Curiosity had not won since he beat a fair field in the Winter Handicap at Gore on May 20, 1950. Since then he has been placed only once, so it was not surprising that he returned his supporters a win dividend of £6l 13s 6d for £l. Like many of the progeny of Jack Potts, Curiosity has taken time to become solid and now that he has struck form he should carry on, as he has more than average ability. Inquisitive Lady came from a. long way back for second and she may not be long winning. Denbry was most unlucky. He broke badly at the start and lost at least 60 yards before he settled down. He gradually made up ground, but he was forced to travel wide out over the final six furlongs. He finished on gamely for third. The Josedale Grattan gelding was having his first start after a spell and he should not be long making amends. Radiant Night, the favourite, was one of the first beaten. He raced one out just behind the leader to the straight, at which stage he was still pulling double. He stopped very quickly, but was not disgraced. He made amends later in the day when he made an exhibition of the Taiko Handicap field in the good time of 2min 39sec for the mile and a quarter. Helali, which finished second, recorded 2min 38 l-ssec, a splendid effort on a grass- track. In a pool of 13,362 tickets on the first leg of the double, the John Hole Memorial Handicap, 113 were invested on the winner, Curiosity. One of these was not redeemed in the Kerrytown Handicap and two were placed on the winner, Roschana, the successful combination returning £5521 17s for £l. The totalisator investments of £63.834, including £6681 on the double, were a record for the club. Last year investments amounted to £53,501.
The meeting was held in very warm but overcast weather before a large attendance. The track was in splendid order, but the bend out of the straight appeared to cause trouble. Apparently it is not sufficiently banked. The portable electric totalisator operated for the first time at a trotting meeting at Washdyke, but the last race was still run half an hour late. Curiosity Leads AH The Way The Jack Potts gelding. Curiosity, led all the way and held on gamely under pressure to win the John Hole Memorial Handicap. He was closely attended all the way by Radiant Night, an odds-on favourite, and at the straight entrance they were followed by Statesman. Financial, Denbry, Red Chase and Sir Leonard. Curiosity always had the measure of thg opposition and he held on gamely to win Inquisitive Lady ran a fine race for second. She was towards the rear of the field most of the way and she was giving the leaders a big start at the straight entrance. She finished very fast and was catching Curiosity at every stride. Denbry might have been a little unlucky to finish no closer than third. He broke badly at the start and lost about 60 yards. He covered a considerable amount of extra ground over the last six furlongs. The former Southland-trained gelding should win the first time he begins reasonably well. Financial was a useful fourth after tangling in the straight She was followed by Lindy Lou, Affable, Statesman and Radiant Night. Roschana Wins Narrowly Roschana was always one of the leaders in the Kerrytown Handicap and she finished with a great burst of speed to take a narrow decision. Roschana began best, but she was steadied behind Clean Sweep at the end of two furlongs. She received a perfect run for the rest of the race and turning for home she was following Clean Sweep and Crafty Guy, with Aerogard, Grenade and Affectation handy. Crafty Guy looked to be doing the best of the field inside the furlong, but he was being strongly challenged by Aerogard. Clean Sweep (on the rails), and Walnut Jimmie, which broke. When the last-named dropped back, Roschana came through and she caught Aerogard and Crafty Guy just short of the post and won going away by a neck.
Aerogard and Crafty Guy dead-heated for second, clear of a big bunch, which included Clean Sweep, Grenade, Walnut Jimmie, Brooksby Hall, Corunna, Trouville and Officious. '
Walnut Jimmie, Blue Print and First Charge broke at the start and Officious, Super Scotch and Regal Parade lost ground.Radiant Night Makes Amends
Radiant Night, the favourite, made amends for his failure earlier in the day when be outclassed the field in the Taiko Handicap. He was a little slow at the start, but he moved into fourth place behind Archaic, Night Flight, and Financial at the end of three furlongs and from then on he always had the race in safe keeping. He took control with two furlongs to run and he was followed by Archaic at the straight entrance, with two lengths to Night Flight, Financial, Lindy Lou and Helali. Radiant Night was travelling comfortably at the post after holding off a strong late challenge from Helali.
Helali went' a great race from 12 yards. He was a little slow away and he made “P a x ground. He was giving Radiant Night a start at the straight entrance and he got within a length of him. , ? el< l on gamely under pressure for third ahead of Inquisitive Lady, which finished from the back, with Essendon at the head of a tired lot. Inquisitive Ladv. Blue Print. Affable, Essendon, Boston Lady and Glengarry lost ground at the start. ♦ Results:—
