The bridge circle of the New Zealand Pioneers’ and Descendants’ Club ended its season with a dinner party at a Christchurch hotel and a bridge tournament. Miss Mary Wigley, the president, was presented with a gift of Wedgwood china on behalf of the members. Mrs M. Herriot, treasurer of the circle, was presented with playing cards. The honorary secretary of the club (Mrs Elsie M. White) was the guest of honour. The tournament prizes, given by Mrs I. Edbrooke, Mrs A. Schumacher, Miss E. Guy. Miss E. Pitcaithley, and Mrs L. McDonald, were won by Mrs E. Webb. Mrs M. White, Mrs A. Archibald, Mrs E. de la Mare, and Mrs M. Spence. Mrs C. Wilson won the challenge trophv for the “Charlotte Jane” competitions and Mrs F. Orchard the prize for run-ner-up.

The sixty-sixth annual meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held last week. In the absence of the president (Miss C. Henderson), Mrs B. James, vice-president, took the chair, and welcomed two new members. Reports on the balance-sheet, and the activities of the union during the year were read by Miss M. B. LovellSmith, and Miss M. M. Thomas. It was reported that Miss Henderson, who has held office for the last 25 years, had resigned the presidency because of ill-health. Officers were elected as follows:—pres’dent. Mrs H. LovellSmith; white ribbon officer, Mrs Neutze; social arrangements, Mrs Lennon and helpers. An American motion picture company is planning to film the life story of President Roosevelt. His widow. Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt, will collaborate in the production of the film, which is expected to take several years to complete. Lady Mayre Rous, 21-year-old daughter of the Earl and Countess of Stradbroke, of Beccles, Suffolk, arrived in Sydney recently as an air hostess with Trans-Oceanic Airways. She worked for two months in a button factory, earning Is 8d an hour to save £7O for the trip. She has also tried acting and modelling in London, and hopes to take a job in broadcasting while in Australia. It will be her second visit to Australia, as she accompanied her father, when, as Viscount Dunwich, he was private secretary to the Governor of Victoria in 1946 and 1947.
