ATHLETICS

MEETING AT RUGBY PARK J. R. CLARKE WINS ROAD RACE In preparation for the Canterbury marathon championship to be run on January 26 the Canterbury Centre of the Zealand Amateur Athletic Association held the third trial race on Saturday. This was over a distance of 20 miles, the previous trials being over 15 miles on November 3 and 18 miles on November 24. The race ended at Rugby Park in a

triumph for the Empire Games runner, J. R. Clarke, with W. A. Kennedy in second place. Clarke’s time, Ihr sosec, compares favourably with any previous record. In the three road races held Clarke has shown consistency, registering fastest times, and Kennedy has two seconds and a third. Both winner and runner-up are members of the Polytechr nic Club, noted for its distance runners. Clarke’s great burst of speed on the 440 yards Rugby Park track was similar to his finishing effort in the Empire Games marathon at Auckland, in which he finished third to J. T. Holden (England) and S. Luyt (South Africa). Clarke was only 6J minutes slower than the English champion after racing the last quar-ter-mile at a sprinter’s speed. Interest was added to the inter-club events by the appearance of visiting athletes, including J. H. Borland, who competed in the pole vault and 220 yards hurdles. At the Empire Games Borland appeared as a high jumper, sharing second place after clearing 6ft sin. The young Westonian sprinter, I. Coates, showed further improvement in winning the 100 yards in 10.8 sec and the junior 220 yards in 24sec. In the details the following abbreviations are used:—C.C. (Crichton Cobbers), M.
