SALE OF POISON LIQUOR
MAN CONVICTED OF MURDER
(Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 13. John Hardie, a former convict and a confessed bootlegger, was convicted of murder to-day in Atlanta, Georgia, in a case arising from 38 deaths from poison liquor. The jury recommended mercy, which made a life sentence mandatory under Georgia law. Hardie, who weighs 25 stone 101 b, was specifically charged with the murder of John Blout, one of 38 persons who died in October after drinking bootleg liquor. A criminologist testified yesterday that 1000 persons could have been killed by the 99 gallons of poisonous liquor that Hardie had distributed. He said that when it united with the proteins in the body it became formaldehyde, and that in effect the 38 victims were embalmed alive.
