BLIND SEED DISEASE PRE-HARVEST EXAMINATION OF RYEGRASS ADVISABLf 1. Tho sample should be taken when the crop is considered to be within a week of being ready to harvest, as reports on more immature sempies are not so reliable. 2. If wet weather follows after the sample hes been drawn, and particularly If harvesting is thus delayed, a further sample should bo submitted. This is most important when the first sample shows some infection,, as wet weather may cause a further spread. 3. The seed heads comprising the sample should be drawn from various places covering the whole area of the crop. This is best done by walking to and fro across tho area and picking one seed head every 5 to IC paces. The crossing of the area should be made at 5 to 10yd. intervals, depending on the site of the area being sampled. The aim should be to collect 400 to 500 seed heads drawn individually at more or leu regular intervals over tho crop. The sample should be trimmed to about lOin In length and labelled in block letters with the sender’s name, address, and telephone number. The date of sampling and the registered number of the area under certification (if applicable) should also bo alvon. The sample should be wrapped and tied in several thicknesses of paper and dispatched IMMEDIATELY. Samples should bo dispatched to tho Seed-testing Station, Department of Agriculture, Box 110, Timaru. Alternatively if the grower is in the North Canterbury area, (he sample, for convenience, may be forwarded to the Department of Agriculture. If the sample Is not forwarded to the Department Immediately it has been collected, it will dry out and become difficult to examine, while promptness of dispatch .will also ensure earlier notification of tho result. alex.
