HAWKE CUP MATCH AT MASTERTON.

(New Zealand Press Association) MASTERTON, December 14. A Hawke Cup elimination match between Marlborough and Wairarapa began at the Park Oval, Masterton, this afternoon after rain had prevented play this morning. Marlborough won the toss, and was all out for 170, of which A. Neal made 66. Wairarapa began badly and at stumps had lost two wickets for 13 runs. The wicket was soft, and soon cut up. An inch of rain in the hour after stumps were drawn will make it worse to-morrow. Scores:— Marlborough 185 (A. Neal 86, J. Barnett 29, J. McGuire 21, G. Bonsall 13; M. Chapple took four wickets for 41, A. Cruickshank four for 65, and H. Whiting one for 29). Wairarapa 13 for two wickets (G. Masters not out; T. Neal took one wicket for 5, A. Neal one for 8.

SCHOOL MATCH

WANGANUI DRAWS WITH CHRIST’S COLLEGE After being 112 runs behind in the first innings of its match against Christ’s College, Wanganui Collegiate School fought back gamely in the second day’s play to draw the game. It was a most interesting match in which the honours went to the Christ’s College bowler, T. F. Gibson, who took nine wickets for 28 runs in the first innings and five for 37 in fee second. Gibson, with his in-swingers and a variation with a ball that cut back sharply from leg, had his opponents guessing all the time. With good coaching Gibson is bound to come under the notice of the senior selectors. Wanganui, after losing three wickets for 34 runs on the first day, offered sterner resistance yesterday, when Zohrab carried his score from 15 to 59, and Hare made 37 before he Was bowled. Wanganui batted with more confidence when sent in a second time, although after a sound opening by B. Hamilton and Rerinie several wickets fell quickly. Hare, Artth 19 runs, gave some stability, and Young (not out 50), Blathwayt (21), and Beattie (29) scored freely off bowlers who were beginning to lose their fire. Following were the scores:—

Total for nine wickets .. 210 Bowling: Gibson, five wickets for 37 runs; Hawkes, one for 39; Clarke, one for 14; Mayne, one for 27. REPRESENTATIVE PRACTICES These nets will be held next week, commencing Monday, for the Plunket Shield team and ground bowlers. Advt.
