PROSPECTS FOR RANGIORA

JEOPARDY FAVOURED TODAY

AYRLAND’S PRIDE SHOULD RACE WELL

Strong fields of maiden and improving pacers and trotters are entered for the Rangiora-Cheviot Trotting Clubs meeting at Rangiora to-day. The Belfast-owned and trained Jeopardy, which had two wins and a placing at the Nelson meeting last week-end, is likely to be the favourite for the Cheviot Handicap, one of the most open races during the day. Jeopardy has taken time to win, but he has seldom run a bad race. He appears to have become ■ more solid with age, and he should take part in the finish of to-day’s race. He is very fit. Jeopardy is a half-brother by Gamble to the promising Royal Cameo, a winner earlier in the season. Mount Lebanon resumed racing after a spell at the New Brighton meeting on December 1, and he finished .very fast from a long way back for second behind Bronzette in the Canterbury Handicap. The Grattan Loyal horse was placed at his two appearances at Waimate last week, and with a little luck he might have won one of them. He should be improved by his recent racing, and may show to advantage to-day. c* a five -year-old mare by U. Ayrland s Pride in Form Ave-year-old staluon, Ayrland s Pride, has been only un P' a « d lour starts thi! season, occasion he met trouble or « «^ ight been Placed. He is engaged in both the Rangiora Cup and President s Handicap to-day, and he should wm one race. He has yet to show form over two miles, but there is no reason to doubt his stamina.

San Fernando, Gallant Day, Lochella, and Mystery Dillon may offer most opposition to Ay Hand’s Pride and Flagship. A similar field is engaged in the President s Handicap, and form in the earlier race should be a reliable guide. Flagship is a more than useful sprinter, and he may win. Ayrland’s Pride should again race well. He looks handily placed on the front mark and should set the backmarkers a difficult task.

Casacando seems about to return to form, and he could easily upset calculations. Colleague, Queen of Scots, San Fernando, Tiny Scott, and Roschana do not exhaust the possibilities in an open field.

The Trotters A strong field of improving trotters is engaged in the Hurunui Handicap, and betting will probably cover a wide range. Super Sound, a member of J. Young’s team, won impressively at Waimate last week, and she should again race well. Combateer has been placed at his three most recent appearances. He is very well at present. Efficient has more ability than most in his class, but he is not always reliable. Beau Scott is making a fresh start and he may cause a surprise. Idealist, Scotty’s Double, Branford, and Sure Strike make most appeal of the others. Native Dictator, Moth, and Demimonde should race well in the Parnassus Handicap. Forearmed, Mocassin, Novaro, and Idealist are also highly regarded.

There are three races for maiden pacers, and included In the fields are some well-bred horses. Starlet, which may be one of the favourites for the First Introductory Handicap, is a half-sister to Riviera and Petro Star. She had her first race in the New Zealand Oaks and finished a creditable fourth. Supreme Command and Sandygowan may offer most

opposition to her. Manai, Empyrian, and Frans Gold should be hard to beat in the Second Introductory Handicap. Laurel Hall, buver Lace, and Jenny Grattan may also show up. Chippewa, Top Mast, and Maroca are expected to race well in the Handicap, in which most of the field have very little to recommend them. The double will be run on the Rangiora Cup and the Cheviot Handicap.
