TECHNICAL COLLEGE

The idea that children went to school merely to qualify in their particular field was a narrow view of education, said the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. Martin Sullivan) in his address at the prize-giving ceremony of the Christchurch Technical College last evening. Education was more than a qualifying course for a vocation; it was a preparation for citizenship, said Dean Sullivan. Pupils should take a full part in school life. This would broaden their horizon Bnd fit them for citizenship in a democracy. The exercize of their rights and duties as citizens was the only way the members of a democracy would preserve their way of We. Orchestral and choral items and a girls’ ballet and a boys’ gymnastic display were given. Th© girls’ prizes were presented by Mrs M. E- Lyons, wife of the chairman of th© board of managers, and the boys’ prizes by Dean Sullivan. Special guests were the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M-P.) and Mrs Mactariqne and Dr. D. E.
