WITHDRAWAL OF BAIL
FAILURE TO OBSERVE CONDITIONS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 10. An unusual action—stated by the police to emphasise that defendants released on bail must observe the conditions of the release—was brought in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, and the defendant, who had failed to report daily to the police station, was ordered to be detained in custody. The defendant, Eric John Jones, aged 52, a cook and labourer, who had appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of theft, had been admitted to bail in the sum oi £lOO self and a surety of £lOO, a condition being that he report daily at the Wellington South Police Station. “The Court treated him with the utmost c insideration in his release,” said Senior-Detective G. Callaghan. Although warned by the chief detective, he had ignored his obligations. If defendants igno.* 1 the terms on which they were released they would have to face the consequences, hence the present action, said Senior-Detective Callaghan. *You forfeit your liberty and will be detained in prison until your trial,'’ the Magistrate (Mr J.
