TROTTING BARRIER REEF’S RECORD
MEMBER OF WELL-KNOWN FAMILY
The Invercargill-owned trotter Barrier Reef has now won the two main events for trotters at the New Zealand Cup meeting, and he looks likely to win again before the end of the carnival. The U. Scott gelding has aiways shown more speed than most in his class, but he has not always been reliable. Under W. J. Coates, who has been training him since H. J. Smith gave up professional training at the end of August, he is trotting much more solidly. Since being trained by Coates Barrier Reef has had three starts for two wins and one placing for £2490 in stakes. He is now on a very tight mark and will have fewer opportunities, but if he trots as well as he did on Friday he should win again. Altogether he has had 46 races for 10 wins, 13 placings. and £7465 in stakes, most of it in the interests of Mrs M. Rice. Barrier Reef was bred at Wyndham by the late F. W McGill, in whose interests he had his early racing. He was trained by E. Todd, and at his first appearance he won at Invercargill as a four-year-old. He had another win that season before being sent to be trained by H. J. Smith, who had met with considerable success with other members of his family. One of his best performances for Mr McGill was in the E. G. Bridgens Memorial Gold Cup at Epsom in December, 1948, when he finished second to Gold Horizon, runner-up in the Dominion Handicap on Friday. He was later sold to Mrs Rice.
As a six-year-old he beat Ripcord and Single Task in the Intermediate Handicap, and Sure Harvest and Fantom in the Reta Peter Handicap at the Addington Easter meeting in 1950. Last season he had 11 starts for one win, in the mile and a quarter heat for trotters at the Inter-Dominion Championships. He ran fourth to Gtty Belwin, Signal Li’ht, and Dictation in the final.
Barrier Reef is a seven-year-old gelding by U. Scott from Rocks Ahead, bv Happy Voyage from First Water, ancestress of many fine performers, including Navigate, Global Voyage, Nell Grattan. Aqua Bond, Tactics, Mighty Song, Trustee, First Lord, Dark Water. Ned Worthy, Dillondale. and Indemnity.
Pacer Bursts Blood Vessel Dixie Beau, one of the most consistent pacers to race at Sydney, dropped dead during training recently. It was found that he had burst a blood vessel. During his career on Sydney tracks. Dixie Beau won 11 races, including the Harold Park £lOOO and Free-for-All. Dixie Beau also won five races in the country. Gay Lyric The Gamble five-year-old, Gay Lyric, was showing signs of lameness, and, rather than risk a serious break-down, it was decided to let him miss the first two days of the cup meeting. He will probably race on one of the later days. Gay Lyric has shown great promise in his racing this season, and his track work has been of a high standard. He is trained at Addington by G. S. Smith, and he should soon win again. Now at New Brighton The speedy but erratic Bessie Grattan 16 the latest additldn to H. M. Kerr's team at New Brighton. Bessie Grattan, a seven-year-old mare by Josedale Grattan from Eyenew, has not won since she beat Congressional and Mamanuas over two miles at New Brighton In September, 1949. ft Kerr can make her do her best, she could develop into a good winner, for she has mpre ability than most in her class. New Driving Rule The rule requiring drivers to have a rein in each hand throughout a race was enforced at Invercargill on November 3, reports the “New Zealand Trotting Calendar." Apart from one or two obvious breaches, the rule was remarkably well observed during the running and at the finish. It was most noticeable that there was less use of the whip, but horses were inclined to run about in the final furlong with drivers having less control of them. Deaths of Horses
The death of Seal Globe is among those reported to the New Zealand Trotting Conterence recently. Owned by R. E. and C. M. Laing, Ashburton, Seal Globe is the dam of Dictation, which established five trotting records last season. The youngest of Seal Globe's progeny fa a yearling colt by Indianapolis.
Royal stone (Nobleman—Coppiestone) also died recently. He was a good winner as a trotter. Stud News
True Metal (Truman Direct—White Gold, has foaled a filly to U. Scott. Cisterna has foaled a bay colt to Light Brigade, and she will return to him. Cis.erna is closely related to Highland Fling. Retadale (Sandydale—Reta McKinnev) has foaled a bay colt by Dillala, and will return to him. Lady Avonmore (Nobleman—Renetta Dillon) has a black filly by Lochinvar. Sandydale’s Record Lord Sandy, a winner at the recent Franklin meeting, gave Sandydale his one-hundredth individual winner in New Zealand. Sandydale was imported to New Zealand by Mr G. Youngson. Gore, at whose stud Dillon Hall now stands. In his first season at the stud in this country he sired, among others, Sandiways (Canterbury Park Juvenile Handicap), Sandstone (second in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes), and Dillondale, a good b-nHicap horse and winner of more than £5OOO in stakes. Sandydale has alwavs been well up on the sires’ list, and among his best performers have been Captain Sandv. Navigate, Good Review, Sahara Queen, Te Maru. and Constellation among the pacers, and Tatvsdale, Royal Da'e, Mistvdale. Sandwrack, and Braemarnie among the trotters. As a brood mare sire, Captain Sandy has met with success, and he Is the sire of Sandfast, the dam of Johnny Globe.
