HOLIDAYS IN AUCKLAND
NEW YEAR PERIOD RETAILERS TO CLOSE FOR , FOUR DAYS (New Zealand Preu Association) AUCKLAND, October 23. Auckland retailers, including grocers, will be closed for four days over the New Year holidays. Moreover, there will be no late shopping night on Friday, December 28, the last shopping day before New Year’s Day. Butchers and bakers have not yet made any decision about the New Year holidays. There will be a late shopping.night on the day before Christmas Day, a Monday. The shops will then be closed for two days ana will open again on Thursday and Friday. They will dose at 5.30 p.m. on Friday, and will not reopen until Wednesday, January 2. In terms of the Retail Shop Assistants’ Award, January 1 and 2 are holidays. However, the award provides that December 31 may be substituted for January 2 by agreement between the parties. Such an agreement has been reached by the employers’ and employees* organisations in Auckland. The agreement cpvers the metropolitan area, Hamilton, Whangarei, and a number of country districts. Mr A. W. Scottmg, president of the Auckland Master Butchers’ Association, said the butchers hoped to have the same holiday break as the rest of the retailers, but. slaughtermen’s and meat loaders’ hours raised a problem. The matter plight be referred to the Arbitration Court for a decision.
