SHOPLIFTING AT WELLINGTON
SHOP MANAGERS SPEAK OF INCREASE (New Zealand Preet Association) WELLINGTON, October 23. "This offence is reaching the proportions where it is seriously affecting the net profit of the house,” said the manager of a Wellington store to-day. when he was asked about shoplifting by school children. He added that children from all the primary and boys’ secondary schools m Wellington bad been detected shoplifting, as well as adults in practically every walk of life. Another store manager said that shoplifting was "aH too prevalent” and was "a sad commentary on our standard of honesty.” A drapery store manager said that another difficulty to contend with was the woman who deliberately damaged a dress because she could not afford to purchase it Shop managers said that everything possible to discourage shoplifting had been tried, but the thefts in some cases were so barefaced and well planned that these efforts failed. The thefts were so frequent that if a shop reported every offender the manager would have to abend the whole tff his time at the police station making statement*.
